Ryan L - Lead Barber

Ryan L

“I’ve been in the hairdressing industry since I was 15 so nearly fifteen years. I was drawn to the hair industry as Art school was way too restrictive. Being an outsider looking in the world of hair it looked to be very individual, no limits, maximum creativity and for someone who suffers with ADHD it’s a craft that makes my ADHD a superpower not a weakness. I’m able to be my full self whilst finally having that something I love to keep laser focused on and bring out my incredibly accurate precision based side.

Being a Barber enables me to be creative all day everyday and mentally stimulated, but what I enjoy most about being a stylist is the ability to lift someones spirits. This was cemented after lockdown when some of my clients were at their lowest point and the power of a great haircut really helped them, it allowed them to walk proud feeling strong again within themselves.

Whose hair would I like to cut? For anyone who knows me its a very simple answer. Its going to have to be Post Malone. He’s got incredible style, he’s very versatile, has his own identity but most of all I just think he’d be an incredible person to work with. Has a lovely soul and seems to be a genuinely lovely person and being surrounded by that world would be amazing. It would be a dream come true so if someone who knows him reads this do please let him know!

There isn’t a specific hair type or haircut I enjoy doing more than another. I thrive in ensuring my clients have an amazing service and that they get the haircut they truly desire or a haircut that best suits their hair type, face shape and their own personal style. Most importantly though, I want to give my clients something that grows out very well, that’s something I can almost certainly guarantee. My consistency and passion to every client I think is what separates me from other stylists.

Why should clients visit me? This falls back on to a point I made earlier in that I thrive in ensuring my clients have an amazing service and that they get the best haircut I can give. This will be from their first cut to all the cuts they have afterwards with me.

Precision is my speciality. Giving a very accurate haircut ensuring that the style not only looks amazing when they leave the chair but also enabling them to style their own hair at home and also as it grows out. This is the case for my haircuts, regardless of hair type, style and length. I would have to say that my signature would be more classic styles that sit off the face. Broken curtains, side partings basically anything that has texture and length on top.

One area that most people struggle with is their growth patterns, and one of my strengths is manipulating strong growth patterns so they work with desired styles and then educating my clients in how to deal with them.

The best hair advice I could give to a client is to be sure about what it is you really want from your hair and to understand your hair capabilities. I’d never over sell a style/cut and under deliver. I will be very honest and if you describe/show me something that isn’t achievable I’ll be honest and advise the best possible alternative.

My go to hair product would have to be Kevin Murphy free hold. I find myself using it in long hair, short hair, curly and straight. Very recently I discovered just how much I use it. We didnt have any in the shop and I found myself thinking “damn I wish I had some free hold” with 80% of my clients.
