Charlie - Art Director Barber

Charlie

“I’ve been in the industry for 20 years this year which makes me feel old!! I fell into the industry by chance, I was always interested in my own hair and experimenting with style, so it’s was suggested to me by my family friend who was our hairdresser! Once I got into it and realised the potential options and opportunities I was determined to succeed.

What I enjoy about being in the hair industry is that my working week is varied and I think that’s what I enjoy most! I could be on a shoot with an actor beginning of week, or teaching an individual or a group seminar midweek and then in the barbershop towards then end. I enjoy my time in the shop cutting hair more than I ever have and I think that’s because I’ve found the perfect environment. I am also extremely passionate about the craft and enjoy making the client excited about their hair again..

Longer mens hair is my speciality but I do cut all lengths of hair.  I like the challenge of restyles and creating hair that’s more fashion inspired - a mod or mullet style haircut is usually my signature look. I’ve always been interested in musicians of the past and youth cultures and there is always an interesting story or inspiration behind their hairstyles. I would really like to cut Charlie Hunnam’s hair, I’m a huge fan of Sons Of Anarchy and he inspired me to grow my hair after watching it!

The best hair product for me would be Kevin Murphy Easy rider; for longer hair it’s important to create that second day lived in feeling. This product is also great to moisturise and define curl/movement without a strong hold.

The best hair advice I could give to my client is consultation is key when making a change. Make sure you book the restyle appointment which allows extra time. The time is spent to discuss potential options and what suits. It’s good to come prepared and I think images are always great even if it shows a length/fringe/texture. Understanding your likes and dislikes are key!”
